McKinley After School Enrichment Program
The After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) provides a safe, healthy, nurturing and enriching environment for our diverse student base. In our program, school-age students are given the opportunity to develop social and academic skills while their families go to work, school or seek employment. Our staff is qualified and experienced, and works hard to ensure students get the most from the program.
The after school program is open Monday through Friday, from 1:50pm - 6pm, when school is in session. Spots are limited, so incoming students should apply sooner rather than later--do not wait until the first day of school! Vacation and summer camps are also available. For more information, please call (415) 863-2737. Harvey Milk Center Expansion This school year ASEP is expanding! As part of a pilot program with our new partnership with the Harvey Milk Center for Recreational Arts, ASEP’s 4th and 5th grade groups will have a new home at the newly renovated center one block from McKinley (50 Scott Street at Duboce). These students will participate in a slightly altered program, including more arts enrichment opportunities!

Theme-Based Learning ASEP core staff utilizes the concept of Theme-Based Learning to frame student’s learning in a meaningful way over time. Student groups select subjects of interest through a teacher-led democratic decision making process. The majority of each group’s activities such as Kidzlit and SPARK incorporate the selected theme into student’s learning experience. Each theme lasts approximately one month, complete with a final project that incorporates student’s learning.
Kidzlit Every Monday ASEP core staff teach Kidzlit, a literacy based program designed to enhance reading and writing skills through fun, interactive, book-based activities.
SPARK On Tuesdays and Thursdays ASEP core staff provide students with healthy recreation opportunities through ASEP’s SPARK program. The SPARK program is based on non-competitive P.E. activities that encourage children to be physically active and fit.
Homework Hour ASEP has partnered with Creative Out Of School Learning to help develop unique homework stations for each grade level group that are designed to reinforce student’s day time academic learning and help them finish their homework Monday through Thursday.
Snack and Wellness Every day after school students are provided with nutritional snack options that are bought, prepared, and served by ASEP core staff. Our snacks consist of fresh fruit and vegetables, breads and crackers, a protein and healthy beverages such as juice, milk, and water.
Field Trip Fridays
Every Friday (weather permitting) we take students on educational and recreational field trips to local attractions, which include but are not limited to Crissy Field Center, San Francisco Bay Guardian, local museums (such as Exploratorium, Academy of Science, De Young, MoAD, etc.), San Francisco Main Public Library and local parks.
Art Enrichment Program
This year we are excited to offer a total of nine art enrichment classes, which will be hosted in three 11 week sessions on Wednesdays and Fridays. On Fridays, those students who are not attending a field trip will go to their designated art enrichment class for an extended period of time – 1 ˝ hours. Throughout the year, students will be provided with three opportunities to individually select and prioritize their art enrichment classes through a student choice form. Art classes are focused on process and exploration rather than creating an end product. The following are the current art enrichment classes we offer to students on Wednesdays and Fridays:
- Visual Art/Mural Project – Fred Alvarado
- Theatre Arts – Megan Kilian
- Experimental Electronic Sound – Eric Sasz
- Tree Frog Treks – Sky Lee
- Martial Arts – Nathan Chin
- World Dance – Andrea Cortes-Juarbe
- Song Writing – Owen Roberts
- Afro-Brazilian Drumming – Alfie Macias
Community Partnerships
This year ASEP is excited to welcome back returning program partners as well as forge new ones with such strong community based organizations as Mission Science Workshop, Crissy Field Center, Girls on the Run, and the newly renovated Harvey Milk Center for Recreational Arts.
